Yes, and more often than people expect
Crane-assisted removal is standard practice for large or difficult trees. It is not exotic equipment reserved for commercial sites.
The method is straightforward: the crane operator positions the hook, a climber slings the section and attaches it to the crane, the section is taken under tension, the climber makes the cut, and the crane lifts the piece clear of the property to a truck or a drop area. Repeat down the tree.
Why it can be the cheap option
Compare two approaches to the same twenty-eight metre spotted gum over a house on a steep block.
Sectional dismantle. A climber works down the tree rigging every piece. Each section is lowered to a small landing area, then carried or winched up steps to the street. Three people, two to three days.
Crane lift. Whole sections lifted straight over the roof to a truck. Crane plus crew, half a day to a day, plus traffic management.
The crane costs more per hour. It uses far fewer hours, and it eliminates the carry entirely. On the big jobs the totals often land in the crane's favour, and the risk profile is better as well.
Where it comes up on the Central Coast
Overwhelmingly the steep waterfront blocks: Green Point, Kincumber, Saratoga, Daleys Point, the upper streets at Avoca Beach and the escarpment streets behind Gosford.
The common factor is not the tree. It is that there is nowhere to lower into and no practical way to carry the material out.
Cranes also earn their keep on large trees directly over houses on ordinary blocks, and on trees that have already partly failed where climbing is unsafe.
What has to be organised first
Setup ground. Firm and level, within the crane's reach, with room to deploy outriggers. Usually the street.
Clear airspace. No conductors, no structures in the lift path. Overhead line is the most common reason a crane cannot be used.
Road occupancy and traffic management. A traffic control plan, certified controllers and approval from the relevant authority. Real cost, real lead time.
A lift plan. Section weights calculated against the crane's load chart at the required radius. Guessing a section weight is how cranes get into trouble.
Neighbour notification, where the lift path crosses a boundary.
When it is not the answer
Where there is nowhere on the street to set up. Where overhead conductors cross the lift path — see the power line guide. Where the tree is small enough that mobilising a crane is out of proportion to the job. And where the street is too narrow to close, which rules out a fair number of older Central Coast streets.
What to ask
If you are on a steep or difficult block, ask for the job to be priced both ways — dismantle and crane — and compare the totals rather than the hourly rates. A contractor who has not considered the crane option on a genuinely difficult site has not costed the job properly.

Is a crane always more expensive than climbing?
No, and that surprises people. A crane has a high hourly cost, but it converts a two or three day sectional dismantle into a half-day lift. On a large tree over a house on a steep block the total frequently comes out lower, because you are paying for a few hours of crane and crew instead of days of climbing, rigging and hand-carrying.
What does a crane need to be able to set up?
Firm, level ground within reach of the tree — usually the street — with enough width to deploy outriggers, clear airspace above with no conductors or structures in the lift path, and a load path to a truck. In practice that means road occupancy approval and traffic management on most residential streets, which has to be arranged in advance.
Can a crane be used on a narrow Central Coast street?
Sometimes, with a traffic control plan and a lane or full road closure. The narrow streets around The Entrance, Terrigal and the Gosford escarpment are the hardest, because there may be nowhere to deploy outriggers safely. Where a crane cannot set up, the only remaining option is climbing and rigging, and the quote will reflect the extra days.
Is crane work safer than climbing?
For the right job, generally yes, because sections are supported before they are cut rather than dropped or lowered on rope. It introduces its own hazards — the lift path, the load chart, ground bearing under the outriggers, and the climber working alongside a suspended load — so it needs a properly planned lift, not an improvised one.
