Tree lopping and removal across the Central Coast

Coastal trees, one council, and a storm season that does the damage

The Central Coast grows big trees fast. Warm wet summers, deep sandy loams on the flats and sandstone ridges behind them produce spotted gum, blackbutt and smooth-barked angophora that reach genuine size on ordinary suburban blocks. Then between October and March the southerly busters and east coast lows arrive and find every weak union, every rotten branch collar and every tree that has been topped rather than pruned.

That is the shape of most tree work here. It is not a slow decline — it is a tree that was fine on Friday and has a limb through the pergola on Sunday.

What actually gets done

Tree removal is the bulk of it — dead trees, storm-damaged trees, and the gum planted three metres off a slab in the 1970s that is now lifting the driveway. Where the tree is worth keeping, pruning and crown reduction cut sail area and clear roofs, gutters and service lines without wrecking the structure of the tree.

Palms are their own category. They grow well in this climate and then drop fronds and seed heads into pools and gutters, and because a palm has no branch structure it can only be tidied or taken out — never reduced.

Once the tree is down, stump grinding chews the stump below grade so the ground can be turfed, mulched or planted. Full stump removal is the more expensive option and is only worth it when something is being built over the spot: a slab, a pool shell, a footing or a new service trench.

The permit question is simpler here than in Sydney

Gosford City Council and Wyong Shire Council amalgamated in 2016 to form Central Coast Council. One authority now covers the whole region, so unlike Sydney — where a tree three streets away can sit under an entirely different set of controls — the same tree and vegetation provisions apply whether you are at Patonga or Lake Munmorah.

That does not mean you can cut what you like. Most trees over a certain height or trunk diameter need approval, protected vegetation and biodiversity-mapped land have tighter controls again, and street and verge trees belong to Council regardless of who has been watering them. There are exemptions — dead trees, imminently dangerous trees, and declared weed species among them — and on bushfire-prone land the NSW Rural Fire Service 10/50 entitlement can apply. Bushfire, salt and water

Three local conditions drive more work here than anything else. Blocks backing onto Brisbane Water National Park, Strickland State Forest, Bouddi, Wyrrabalong or Ourimbah State Forest are mapped bushfire-prone, which changes both what you may clear and what an insurer expects you to have done. Beachfront and headland properties from Terrigal to Norah Head deal with salt-laden onshore wind that burns foliage and shortens the life of anything not adapted to it. And the low ground — the Peninsula, the Tuggerah Lakes edge, the river flats at Wyong — has a high water table, which changes root architecture and makes trees far easier to push over than their size suggests.
