Flat, low and completely exposed
Toukley occupies the isthmus between Tuggerah Lake and Budgewoi Lake, a narrow strip of low, flat ground with water on both sides and the coast a short distance east at Noraville and Norah Head. It is one of the most wind-exposed residential areas on the Central Coast, and nearly every tree issue here connects back to that.
Wind does the damage
There is no topography to break the airflow. Southerlies come up the lake, north-easterlies come across it, and in a storm the wind loading on a mature tree here is significantly higher than the same tree would experience in a sheltered valley behind Gosford.
Trees respond by wind-pruning — the crown thins and leans away from the prevailing direction — and an unbalanced crown is a crown that fails at the union. Preventive reduction and rebalancing is more valuable in Toukley than almost anywhere else on the Coast, and it is far cheaper than a storm call-out.
Salt is the secondary factor. It is not the direct surf exposure of Terrigal, but salt-laden wind off the coast and the lakes still burns foliage on the exposed face of anything that is not a coastal species.
Wet ground and shallow roots
The low ground around the lake margins is poorly drained with a high water table. Broad-leaved paperbark, swamp mahogany and casuarina dominate on that country and are well adapted to it, but they root shallow because they have to.
The failure pattern that follows is whole-tree windthrow rather than limb drop. After sustained rain, a large lake-edge tree with a new lean or lifting ground at the base should be looked at promptly. Waiting to see whether it settles is not a strategy on this ground.

The housing stock
Toukley built out largely as single-storey housing on flat, regular blocks, with a significant retirement and holiday component. That produces two useful characteristics for tree work.
Access is good. Wide streets, usable driveways, room to get a chipper close and a grinder down the side. Labour hours stay down, which is the main thing that keeps a quote sensible.
And the trees are mostly planted garden stock rather than large remnant natives — palms, liquidambar, camphor laurel, a lot of ornamentals. Much of the work is clearance pruning, palm removal and tidying rather than major dismantling.
Getting good value here
