Taking the whole root plate out of the ground

Excavation is a different job to grinding

Stump grinding turns the stump into chip and leaves the roots to rot. Stump removal digs the whole root plate out of the ground and carts it away. They get used interchangeably in conversation and they should not be — they cost different amounts and produce different results.

The test is simple. If the ground is going back to lawn, mulch or garden, grinding is enough and costs less. If a builder, a pool company or a plumber is going to work in that exact spot, you need the root plate gone.

The method

A mini excavator or bobcat digs a ring around the stump to expose the major laterals, which are cut with a chainsaw or the bucket as they are found. Once the plate is free it is levered and lifted out, cut down to truckable pieces and carted. The void is then backfilled with clean fill or sand, compacted in layers, and the surface reinstated.

Where a machine cannot reach — a rear courtyard, a Peninsula block with a single narrow side path, a terraced garden at Green Point — the same sequence happens by hand with a mattock, a shovel and a chainsaw. It works. It just takes a lot longer, and that is what you are paying for.

Central Coast complications worth knowing

Sandstone shelves. Around Gosford, Point Clare, Kariong and Somersby the root plate frequently sits on rock and spreads sideways along the shelf rather than going down. That makes the plate wide and awkward, and it means the excavation footprint is bigger than the stump suggests.

High water table. On the Woy Woy Peninsula, around Umina and Ettalong, and along the Tuggerah Lakes edge from Long Jetty to Chittaway, a deep excavation can find groundwater. The hole needs dewatering and backfilling promptly, and the spoil is heavy, wet and expensive to cart.

Unknown fill. Lake-edge and river-flat blocks have often been filled over decades. Excavation finds old slabs, brick, buried fence lines and occasionally unmarked services. Lodge a Dial Before You Dig enquiry before booking a machine.

Bushfire asset protection zones. On blocks backing onto Brisbane Water National Park, Strickland State Forest or Wyrrabalong, stump removal sometimes forms part of establishing or maintaining an asset protection zone. Sequencing it properly

The cheapest version of this job happens on the same mobilisation as the tree removal, while the machine is already on site and the gates are already open. The most expensive version is a separate visit six months later, after the turf has gone back down, because the surface has to be opened up again.
