Permit fees and the application process
Central Coast Council applies a single vegetation permit regime across the whole region, and applications attract a fee that is payable regardless of the outcome. Where a tree needs development consent rather than a simple permit, the cost and the lead time go up considerably.
Settle three things before accepting a quote: who lodges the application, who pays the fee, and what happens to the price if approval is refused or granted only for a reduction rather than a removal.
An arborist report, where Council requires one to support the application, is a separate professional service with its own fee.
Stump depth and the second visit
A removal quote normally leaves the stump cut low and nothing more. Grinding is a separate line item and, if it is booked as a separate visit, you pay a second mobilisation.
Depth is the other one. The default is 200 to 300 millimetres below grade, which suits turf and garden. A paver bed, a fence footing or an irrigation run needs more, and grinding the same stump twice costs more than going deep once. Waste, tip fees and chip
Chipping on site is cheap. Stem sections too large for the chipper have to be cut, loaded and carted to a facility that charges by weight, and green waste is heavy. On a large hardwood that is a real cost.
Two ways to reduce it: keep the mulch on site as a pile, and have large rounds cut to firewood length and stacked rather than carted.
Traffic management and road occupancy
Where a crane or an elevated work platform sets up on the roadway, or where a lane or footpath has to be closed, you need a traffic control plan, certified traffic controllers and a road occupancy licence from the relevant authority. It is a genuine cost with genuine lead time, and it is common on the narrow streets at The Entrance, Terrigal and the escarpment streets behind Gosford.
Access works
Removing and refitting a fence panel. Lifting pavers. Protecting a driveway with track mats. Hand-carrying where a machine cannot go. On tight Peninsula blocks at Umina Beach and Woy Woy the access work can be a significant proportion of the job.
Reinstatement
Turf compacted or torn by a machine. A garden bed driven over. A cracked paver. Some of this is unavoidable on a difficult site. All of it should be identified and priced at quote stage.
Services and the unexpected
A Dial Before You Dig enquiry before any grinding or excavation is free and should be standard. What it does not cover is private services — irrigation, pool plumbing, garden lighting, a private sewer line — which are frequently unmarked and are found the hard way.
Old fill on the lake-edge and river-flat blocks around Long Jetty, Chittaway and Wyong regularly hides brick, concrete and wire that blunts grinder teeth and slows the job.
Emergency loading
Storm call-outs and after-hours work carry a premium rate. That is legitimate — it is unscheduled work in poor conditions, often at night. It is also avoidable by doing preventive deadwooding and reduction in winter rather than waiting for the tree to decide.
